About Billy Bob

history of Billy Bob

Bro Billy Bob Bohannon is the creation of Dr. Bill W. King.  Someone suggested that Billy Bob is Bill King's "altered ego."  In his colorful, yet mismatched and outdated outfits, Billy Bob tells tales and sings stories.  In the midst of all the fun and laughter will be a positive Christian message too.  In his programs Billy Bob may play any number of instruments including guitar, banjo, mandolin, harmonica, dulcimer, or a not so good fiddle.  He performs mainly for church groups but for civic groups too.  He's even been invited to do wedding rehearsal dinners (but not by the couple!)

It all began around 2002, while Bill served as pastor of Gracewood Baptist Church, in Southaven, MS.  He created the character for a Valentine banquet program at his church.  He intended nothing beyond a one time performance but not long afterwards a church member told a friend from another church about Billy Bob and they asked if he would come perform for their church.  Soon after that more-or-less unintentional beginning, Billy Bob began to be invited to other churches in Northern Mississippi and Western Tennessee.  In the Spring of 2007 Bill moved back to his home state of Alabama, bringing Billy Bob along with him.  He performed as Billy Bob only one time near the end of that year.  Since then Billy Bob has made between fifty to sixty appearances each year.  He has performed from one end of the state to the other, throughout the Southeast, as well as several other parts of this great land.  He has performed at The Alabama and Mississippi Baptist Senior Conferences.  In 2014 he performed for the Alabama State Legislature.  Several newspapers have written stories about the Billy Bob ministry.  A feature story was done by the Alabama Baptist Newspaper in the April 24, 2008 issue.  That article may be viewed on line in their archives.  In 2009 Bill's first book of Billy Bob humor was published by Tate Publishers.  Since then two more Billy Bob books have been published by Oak Tara Publishers.  In 2013 Bill's first Christian novel was published by Oak Tara.  Bill also began writing a weekly column for the Opelika Auburn Newspaper in January 2014.  His weekly column is now carried by 8 newspapers across Alabama.   Two feature columns by Bill will appear in Mature Living magazine in 2016; February and July. He doesn't write as Billy Bob but does include an occasional BB story.  In 2010 he recorded two independent CDs of Billy Bob stories and songs.  Check the schedule to see where Billy Bob will be next.  Call or email to schedule your own date.
